Cost of Studying in the UK for Indian Students — Full Breakdown

An honest, line-by-line breakdown of what a UK degree really costs an Indian student: tuition by programme, city-wise living expenses, one-time charges, hidden costs, and the scholarships and loans that bring the number down.

£10k – £24kTypical annual tuition, undergraduate to PhD
£1,136 / £1,483Monthly living cost outside / inside London

Tuition fees in the UK by programme

Tuition is the largest single line in any UK study budget, and it varies far more by subject and institution than most Indian families expect. Classroom-based subjects such as business, humanities, law and social sciences sit at the lower end. Laboratory-based science, engineering and computing programmes cost more because of equipment and technician time. Clinical medicine, dentistry and veterinary science sit in a category of their own.

Programme levelAnnual tuition (GBP)Indicative annual cost (INR)
Undergraduate (Bachelor's)£10,000 – £20,000₹10.5L – ₹21L
Postgraduate taught (Master's / MSc / MA)£10,000 – £20,000₹10.5L – ₹21L
MBA£18,000 – £45,000₹19L – ₹47L
Doctoral (PhD)£15,000 – £24,000₹15.7L – ₹25L
Pre-master's / foundation£9,000 – £16,000₹9.5L – ₹17L

Broadly, Russell Group universities and London institutions charge at the top of these ranges, established city universities sit in the middle, and modern or specialist universities in smaller cities sit at the bottom. Two students on almost identical MSc Data Science programmes can therefore pay £16,000 and £28,000 respectively — which is precisely why shortlisting on the basis of fit and value, rather than brand alone, matters so much. Our guide to top UK universities compares institutions on exactly this basis.

Monthly living costs in the UK

The Home Office assumes £1,136 per month outside London and £1,483 per month inside London for visa purposes, and those numbers are a reasonable planning baseline. In practice, accommodation dominates the total and everything else is comparatively controllable.

ExpenseOutside LondonLondon
Accommodation (halls or shared flat)£450 – £700£750 – £1,200
Bills (electricity, gas, water)£40 – £50£45 – £60
Food and groceries£160 – £200£180 – £250
Travel and transport£32 (student pass)£70 – £100
Mobile phone£15 – £50£15 – £50
Books and stationery£21£21
Leisure, sport and socialising£130 – £150£150 – £200
Clothing and personal£25£30

Catered halls of residence look expensive on paper but often work out cheaper for first-year undergraduates once utilities, internet and food are included. Postgraduates almost always save money in a shared private flat from the second term onwards.

How much cities differ

Location is the single biggest lever an Indian student controls. A student in Newcastle or Huddersfield can live comfortably on £1,000 a month; the same lifestyle in central London can cost £1,700. Cities such as Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham, Nottingham and Coventry occupy a sensible middle ground with strong universities, large Indian communities and manageable rent. The QS Best Student Cities index scores affordability alongside academic reputation and employer activity, and it is a useful sanity check when you are weighing a London offer against a regional one.

A practical rule of thumb: choosing a strong regional university over a comparable London one saves an Indian student roughly £4,000 to £6,000 a year in rent and transport alone — often more than any scholarship you are likely to win.

One-time and easily forgotten costs

  • Tuition deposit before CAS: £1,000 – £5,000 (deducted from first-year fees)
  • Student visa application fee: £490
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: £776 per year of visa length, paid upfront
  • TB test in India: ₹3,000 – ₹6,000
  • IELTS or PTE test: ₹17,000 – ₹19,000
  • One-way flight to the UK: ₹45,000 – ₹90,000 depending on season
  • Accommodation deposit and advance rent: £500 – £1,500
  • Initial setup — bedding, kitchenware, winter clothing, SIM: £300 – £500

The realistic total in rupees

Adding everything together for a typical one-year master's outside London: tuition of £16,000, living costs of £11,500, visa and health surcharge of £1,266, flights and setup of roughly £1,200. That comes to about £29,966, or approximately ₹31.5 lakh at ₹105 to the pound. The same course in London with central accommodation pushes the figure closer to ₹42 lakh. A three-year undergraduate degree in a mid-cost city typically lands between ₹65 lakh and ₹85 lakh in total.

These are honest planning numbers, not marketing numbers. They also assume no scholarship. Once a GREAT Scholarship, a university merit award or a departmental bursary is applied, most of our students reduce their first-year outlay by £2,000 to £10,000 — see our UK scholarships guide for what you may qualify for.

Six ways to genuinely reduce your UK cost

Choose a one-year master's. The twelve-month UK master's is the structural reason UK study is cheaper than most alternatives. You pay one year of fees instead of two and re-enter the workforce a year earlier.

Apply early for scholarships. Most university merit awards operate on a first-come basis within a funding pot. Applications submitted in the first wave have materially better odds than identical ones submitted in June.

Pick the city before the postcode. Regional universities with excellent subject rankings frequently beat London institutions on graduate outcomes per rupee spent.

Use the 20-hour work allowance sensibly. Campus jobs, library shifts and student ambassador roles pay reasonably and fit around timetables.

Negotiate through your counsellor. Envision applies for scholarships and fee waivers on your behalf at partner institutions; students rarely secure these unaided because they do not know the awards exist.

Plan the forex. Sending tuition in tranches and using a forex card rather than international card payments saves one to three per cent on every transfer, which is meaningful on a £16,000 fee.

Education loans and financial planning

The majority of Indian students fund a UK degree through a combination of family savings and an education loan. Secured loans against property or fixed deposits offer the lowest interest rates and the highest limits. Unsecured loans from NBFCs are faster and are commonly sanctioned up to around ₹40 lakh for students with offers from ranked universities. Either way, the sanction letter also serves as acceptable financial evidence for your visa application, which removes the pressure of parking a large sum in a savings account for 28 days.

Envision's finance desk works with more than fifteen lenders, helps you compare effective interest rates rather than headline rates, and prepares the documentation so that your loan sanction arrives before your CAS deadline rather than after it. Is the cost of studying in the UK worth it for Indian students?

Cost only means something next to return. A twelve-month master's compresses the investment period, and the two-year Graduate Route then gives you an unrestricted window to work in the UK and recover a meaningful share of the outlay before you decide whether to stay, switch to a Skilled Worker visa or return to India. Graduate starting salaries in technology, financial services, consulting and healthcare commonly sit between £28,000 and £40,000 outside London and higher within it, which changes the payback arithmetic considerably.

The students who get the best value are rarely the ones who spent the most. They are the ones who matched a well-ranked, well-taught course to a city they could afford, secured a scholarship because they applied early, and used the work allowance and the Graduate Route deliberately. That sequencing is exactly what a free counselling session is for — bring us your budget and we will tell you honestly what is achievable within it, including when the honest answer is that a different intake or a different city makes better financial sense.

Got Questions?

Cost of Studying in the UK — FAQs

The questions Indian students ask us most often — answered by our certified UK counselling team.

How much does it cost to study in the UK from India in total?
For a one-year master's, most Indian students budget between ₹25 lakh and ₹55 lakh all-in. That covers tuition of roughly £10,000 to £24,000, living costs of £1,136 to £1,483 per month, the £490 visa fee, the Immigration Health Surcharge at £776 per year, flights and initial setup. A three-year bachelor's typically works out to ₹60 lakh to ₹1.1 crore across the full degree.
Is studying in the UK cheaper than the USA or Australia?
Usually, yes, mainly because UK master's degrees take twelve months rather than eighteen to twenty-four. You save an entire year of tuition and living costs and start earning sooner. Headline tuition in the UK is also generally lower than at comparable private US universities, although London living costs are higher than in most Australian cities.
How much money do I need to show for the UK student visa?
You must evidence your outstanding first-year tuition plus £1,483 per month for up to nine months if studying in London, or £1,136 per month for up to nine months elsewhere. The funds must be held for 28 consecutive days. Our UK student visa guide explains the rule in detail.
Can I cover my living costs by working part time in the UK?
Part-time work of up to 20 hours per week during term time typically earns £600 to £900 per month at the National Minimum Wage, which realistically covers groceries, transport and social spending rather than rent and tuition. Treat earnings as a supplement to your budget, never as the foundation of it.
Which UK cities are cheapest for Indian students?
Outside London, cities such as Newcastle, Sheffield, Coventry, Huddersfield, Glasgow and Belfast offer noticeably lower rent, and the £1,136 monthly maintenance figure is far more achievable there. London remains the most expensive by a wide margin, though salaries and internship opportunities are correspondingly higher.
Are education loans available for studying in the UK?
Yes. Envision works with more than 15 banks and NBFCs offering both secured and unsecured education loans, typically covering tuition, living costs, travel and insurance. Unsecured loans are commonly available up to around ₹40 lakh for strong profiles at ranked universities, with repayment beginning after a moratorium period.
Do UK universities charge application fees?
Most direct postgraduate applications are free. UCAS undergraduate applications carry a modest fee for the application itself. The larger upfront outlay is the tuition deposit of £1,000 to £5,000 required before your CAS is issued, which is deducted from your first-year fees.
What one-time costs do students forget to budget for?
The most commonly missed items are the tuition deposit, the Immigration Health Surcharge paid upfront for the full visa length, the TB test, accommodation deposits and advance rent, airport transfer and initial groceries, a UK SIM and phone plan, winter clothing, and course-specific costs such as lab kits, studio materials or field trips.
