Chevening Scholarships are the UK government's flagship award, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. They cover full tuition for a one-year master's, a monthly living stipend, return airfare and an arrival allowance. India receives one of the largest national allocations. The selection criteria are unusual in that academic marks matter less than demonstrated leadership, a genuine networking track record and a specific, credible plan to apply your degree back in India. Applications typically open in August and close in early November, with interviews the following spring.
Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships are administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for students from Commonwealth countries, including India. They fund full tuition, a living allowance, airfare and a thesis or study-travel grant, and are focused on master's and doctoral study in development-relevant fields. Nominations usually come through a nominating body or a participating UK university rather than a direct open application, which is a step many Indian applicants miss entirely.
GREAT Scholarships for India are jointly funded by the British Council and a rotating group of participating UK universities. Each award provides £10,000 towards tuition for a one-year postgraduate programme, with a defined number of awards ring-fenced for India each cycle across eligible subjects. You apply to the university, not the British Council, and eligibility is tied to specific courses — so the choice of programme determines whether the award is even available to you.
Scotland Saltire Scholarships are a Scottish Government initiative awarding £8,000 per year of study to students from India and a small number of other countries, across science, technology, medicine, the creative industries and renewable energy. They apply to master's programmes at Scottish universities and pair well with the lower living costs in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen.
Charles Wallace India Trust grants support Indian students and early-to-mid career professionals working in the arts, heritage, conservation and the humanities. Rather than funding full degrees, CWIT typically funds short courses, residencies, professional visits and doctoral completion — an excellent and under-used route for design, museum studies and conservation candidates.
This is where the majority of Indian students actually receive money, and it is the least-understood category. Almost every UK university operates its own portfolio of awards, and these typically include international merit scholarships worth £2,000 to £10,000 based on academic performance, regional or India-specific awards ring-fenced for South Asian applicants, subject or departmental scholarships funded by faculties and industry partners, sports and music awards, alumni and sibling discounts of five to ten per cent, and early-payment or early-acceptance discounts.
Two features matter enormously. First, many of these awards are allocated on a rolling basis from a fixed annual pot, so timing beats brilliance — an October application with a 62 per cent aggregate frequently succeeds where an identical May application fails. Second, a significant number are automatic once you meet a stated threshold, but only if you apply for the course early enough to be considered. Beyond the UK-side schemes, Indian students should look at domestic sources: the National Overseas Scholarship for eligible SC, ST and denotified tribe candidates; state government overseas scholarship schemes in Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and elsewhere; corporate and trust funding from bodies such as the JN Tata Endowment, the Aga Khan Foundation, K C Mahindra Education Trust and Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation; and community or caste-based educational trusts that fund overseas postgraduate study. These frequently have earlier deadlines than the UK schemes and are far less crowded than Chevening.

Apply in the first wave. This is the highest-leverage action available to you and it costs nothing. Funding pots empty; deadlines are not the same as the point at which money runs out.
Write for the specific award. Selection panels read hundreds of essays that describe ambition in general terms. The ones that win name the modules, the research group, the sector problem and the measurable thing the applicant intends to do afterwards.
Evidence leadership, not just marks. For Chevening in particular, a candidate with 62 per cent who has run a real initiative, mentored a team or built a professional network will outperform a 78 per cent candidate with nothing outside coursework.
